If you are responsible for buying a laser cutter, press brake, or plasma cutter for a metal fabrication shop, this checklist is for you. I have been handling equipment purchases for eleven years. This is also where the small-shop bias shows up. I have taken $2,000 orders and $200,000 orders. The $2,000 jobs usually teach you more about a machine's real limits than the big ones. Small does not mean unimportant. It means potential.

2. Compare itemized quotes, not headline numbers

3. Verify power, air, and floor space before you sign

The most expensive mistake I ever made happened in September 2022: ordering a new fiber laser without checking our electrical service. The sales rep asked, "You have 480V, right?" We said yes. The machine arrived with a main disconnect rated for a service we did not have. It cost $12,000 in electrical upgrades and a three-week delay.

Check voltage, phase, air pressure, air quality, and floor space. A 30kW fiber laser needs more than a bigger outlet. It needs proper grounding, a chiller with enough capacity, and dry air. And if you are running a stick welder plasma cutter setup in the same shop, do not assume your existing compressed air is clean enough. Plasma systems are more forgiving than lasers, but both need dry, oil-free air at the right CFM.

4. Ask about service response time, not just machine specs

The numbers said choose a lesser-known import with a 12% lower price and similar cutting speed. My gut said stick with a brand that had local service. I went with my gut. Three years later, I know the 12% savings would have disappeared in the first two-week downtime.

It took me six years and about forty equipment purchases to understand that the machine specs matter less than the service network. Ask for a service contract in writing. Ask what "in the office today" means: same-day remote support? Next-day onsite? Ask how many service technicians they have in your area. Ask whether the tech comes with spare parts or needs to order them. Downtime is not just lost hours; it is missed customer deadlines and the reputation damage that follows.

5. Run your material on the actual machine

The seller's insurance covered the machine, but the rigging company did not have enough coverage for the damage to the building slab. I ended up spending $2,800 on repairs and legal fees.

Get the exact FOB point, the unloading responsibility, the required ceiling height, and the leveling specs. Get all of it in writing. If someone says "that is standard," ask them to write "standard" into the contract. The same principle applies to the laser gas supply if you buy a CO2 system. Who owns the gas lines? Who installs the tank? It sounds small until the machine is sitting there waiting for a regulator.

A Few Extra Warnings

Most of these mistakes come from the same pattern: rushing a six-figure decision on a two-week timeline. I once had 48 hours to decide before a year-end tax credit expired. Normally I would fly out and see the machine running. There was no time. I went ahead based on a video call. It worked out, but it could have gone badly.

If you are a small shop, do not let a vendor make you feel like your question is too small. When I was starting out, the vendors who treated my $200 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $20,000 orders. The ones who waved me off? I don't remember their names, but I remember the feeling.

One more thing: after you buy, keep your own service log. Note every alarm, every consumable change, every offset adjustment. That log becomes the most honest operator's manual you will ever have.

The goal is not to avoid every mistake. The goal is to make mistakes that cost less than the equipment you are buying.
